Predicting their response to future climate change is therefore crucial, but represents a challenge because the ecological functioning that determines their distribution remains controversial. One theory suggests that hydroclimate (rainfall, relative humidity) is the main factor determining the distribution and transitions between forests and savannas. Another theory suggests that these ecosystems represent alternative stable states, meaning that they coexist under the same climatic conditions and are stabilised by feedback loops between fire and vegetation. Fire therefore plays a central role in their maintenance or transition from one state to another. However, long-term empirical evidence testing the role of fire on these ecosystem transitions remains limited. Resolving this debate is essential for anticipating the future dynamics of tropical landscapes and guiding conservation and management strategies.

The aim of this project is to test whether changes in fire regimes alone can trigger transitions between forests and savannahs in West and Central Africa, or whether other factors (climate, humans) are decisive. If fire is the main driver, these transitions would not be directly reversible, which would imply that fire management could be essential to landscape stability and restoration. Since these transitions are slow processes, they require long-term observations on time scales of more than a thousand years, which only palaeoecology can provide. However, palaeoecological reconstructions present methodological challenges.

To address this issue, we propose to combine the FTIR analysis of charcoal with the calibration of a fire model, in order to quantitatively reconstruct the main components of past fire regimes (intensity, frequency, area burnt, origin). These analyses will be carried out on sediments covering the last 3,000 years, and will be compared with reconstructions of vegetation and climate in order to establish the precise chronology of their changes.

Finally, a dynamic tree-cover model will be developed using these reconstructions to assess whether changes in fire regimes alone can trigger forest-savannah transitions or whether other factors need to be taken into account. These simulations will also be used to determine whether alternative stable states exist in relation to tree cover and whether the changes in vegetation observed correspond to tipping points.

By combining quantitative fire reconstructions with dynamic vegetation modelling, this project will establish a new methodological framework for studying past transitions between ecosystems and identifying their drivers. Our results can be used to improve predictions of the responses of tropical ecosystems to global change, and will ultimately help to guide future management and conservation strategies for these ecosystems.

For example, we have produced a model of a field site that is then used in training courses. This is useful for students who were unable to take part in the campaign, or for documenting an area before it is modified.

Today, I'm keen to continue my training and to explore certain themes in greater depth. There are two areas that particularly interest me:

Firstly, high precision on a small scale, particularly in photogrammetry. I want to improve the quality of 3D surveys, refine shooting techniques and understand how to detect micro-reliefs, textures and cracks.

Secondly, the processing of time series from satellite images. I'd like to re-use what I learnt at the IRD to monitor environmental dynamics, such as erosion, sedimentation or changes in vegetation cover.

I'm also interested in training. I'd like to offer modules or workshops for PhD students and researchers in the lab, on GIS tools, photogrammetry or data structuring. I'm a great believer in the idea of transmission, especially when it comes to highly technical subjects.

A vocation born of an earthquake

It all started when I was 11. The great San Francisco earthquake had just happened, and I said to myself: "I want to be a seismologist". This fascination with the Earth's movements never left me. I started a degree in Earth and Universe Sciences at Aix-Marseille University, but once I was in, I quickly realised that seismology, with its mathematical background, wasn't for me. So I decided to branch off into laboratories, geochemistry and stable isotopes, initially as part of a Masters in Montpellier and then a second M2 in Paris, where I specialised in geodynamics.

During my Masters course in Naples, on Vesuvius, my vocation really clicked: I discovered the experimental work, the preparation of samples, the analyses... and I knew that this was where I wanted to develop. In the end, it wasn't the theory that attracted me to research work but the practical side. I've always loved handling instruments, tinkering with things and adjusting protocols. In fact, I often say that I'm more comfortable putting other people's ideas into practice than carrying out scientific projects myself.

Finally, after my Master's studies, I left to do my thesis at the University of Lausanne on elemental and isotopic zonations in natural alpine quartz. Over there, I easily spent ten to twelve hours a day in the lab, and it was a great learning experience. This experience gave me a real technical versatility and rigour that I still use today as a research engineer at CEREGE.

Ten years in London

Once I'd finished my thesis, I went on to do a postdoc in Neuchâtel and then a research fellowship in the UK. I first ended up in the north of England, which was a difficult environment, particularly in terms of the climate, being a southerner.

I ended up getting a job in London for 3 years at Imperial College and then at University College London, within the BEIF (Bloomsbury Environmental Isotope Facility)where I stayed for ten years. I was put in charge of running the laboratory. I did everything: analyses, student training, repairs, orders, cleaning... It almost became my baby. But the Covid pandemic was the trigger that pushed me to take a step back from my situation, and I realised that I wanted to return to France.

The turning point for clumped isotopes

It was also at this time that I began to take a renewed interest in clumped isotopes. I still remember it: in 2006, during my thesis, I heard about the first international conference on the subject, in Melbourne. I thought it was crazy that such fundamental discoveries could still be made in geochemistry!

The clumped isotopes, or grouped isotopes, make it possible to reconstruct past temperatures by analysing, for example, the proportion of molecules containing two heavy atoms, in CO₂ derived from carbonates (mass 47). The colder it is, the more of these molecules there are - a sort of natural thermometer, but a very subtle one.

This technique is very powerful, but also extremely restrictive: samples are rare, analyses take a long time and the protocols are complex. You need a flawless analytical chain. And that's precisely what I know how to put in place.

Back to France, a new start in Aix

In September 2022, I took part in a workshop on clumped isotopes. A colleague in Paris told me about a job opening at CEREGE. I applied and met Alexis Licht, who was in charge of my research. an ERC project on animal migration. The interview went well. I was offered the job. Coincidentally, the machine dedicated to clumped isotopes, a brand new Thermo MAT253+, arrived at CEREGE a few days before I did, in May 2023.

Since my arrival two years ago, I have been working at the PANISS platformI was in charge of getting the spectrometer up and running. My role is to make the measurements reliable, to develop routines and to optimise each stage. Each sample has to be analysed around fifteen times to obtain statistically sound results. It's a job requiring patience and precision.

I also devote part of my time to training. I accompany young researchers, teach them how to use the instruments and share my feedback. I take part in specialist workshops, not to sign first-author articles, but to show how protocols are developed, tested and implemented.

What I prefer is technical dialogue, discussion of methods and practical adjustments. For me, communication is essential. It requires energy and attention, but it's what makes the quality of the collective work.

The idea was to characterise the geological reservoirs where carbon could be reinjected. A way of reusing oil infrastructures for uses compatible with the transition.

Today, I'm more focused on fundamental research, but the approach remains the same: produce reliable data, build robust tools, better understand the interactions between climate, biosphere and geosphere.

What's next? There's no shortage of projects. I'm currently working on the installation of a gas extraction line. offlineto analyse the even rarer but potentially richer 48 mass. I'm also following new technologies with interest, such as laser-coupled spectrometers. Nothing is ever set in stone in isotope analysis. You always have to juggle rigour and exploration, tried and tested methods and innovation.

As the climate change crisis intensifies, it is imperative to understand and mitigate carbon dioxide (CO2). A lesser-known yet important aspect of this crisis is the role played by the vast expanses of marine sediment that cover two-thirds of the Earth's surface. A key component of these sediments is calcium carbonate (CaCO3), a family of minerals that make up the shells and skeletons of marine organisms. Emissions of CO2 lead to acidification of the oceans, triggering the dissolution of CaCO3 which, in turn, neutralises the CO2acting as a sink for CO2on time scales of thousands of years. However, the mechanisms and rate of this dissolution remain unknown due to the challenges posed by the high pressures of the deep ocean and the elusive bacterial communities involved in the dissolution process. The Deep-C project aims to understand the dissolution of CaCO3 in deep waters, paving the way for a deeper understanding and potential mitigation of the impacts of climate change. Focusing on the abyssal and hadal domains, this innovative research aims to unveil the nature and dissolution rate of CaCO3 using high-pressure reactors. These reactors, which simulate the pressure and temperature of deep-sea environments, provide a solid alternative to field studies. Thanks to the integration of state-of-the-art sensors and the use of advanced CaCO3In this way, we will generate accurate, continuous data on the biogeochemical processes underway. By housing bacterial cultures in the reactors, alongside grains of CaCO3 This project will provide an in-depth understanding of dissolution mechanisms. The results will be used to refine a global biogeochemical model, leading to a better understanding of the ocean's role in carbon sequestration and advancing global efforts to effectively mitigate climate change.

1 million years ago, a migratory wave of humans (homo erectus) and animals (large mammals) from the east swept across the northern Mediterranean in a bid to conquer new territories. At the time, the ecosystems they were targeting to ensure their survival were wetlands, veritable oases of life and potential food in a generally arid Mediterranean environment. The tufa of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône, France), with its ecological diversity, its edible plants including proto-cereals, fruits and herbaceous plants, and its water resources, was a favourable site for this migratory dynamic.

A scientific article published in Geosciences by Valérie Andrieu, professor at the University of Aix-Marseille and member of CEREGE, and her colleagues from the Universities of Aix-Marseille, Montpellier and Malta, proposes a reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment of Marseille at the beginning of the Pleistocene, 1 Ma ago, thanks to a multidisciplinary study of the fluvial tuffs in this basin.

Palaeomagnetic measurements have identified the Jaramillo magnetic inversion and dated the Marseille tuff to between 1.06 and 0.8 Ma. The sedimentological data show the existence of a varied depositional environment including natural dams formed by accumulations of plants stabilised by carbonate precipitation, favouring the development of upstream bodies of water within marshes.

Carbon isotope ratios indicate that the Marseille tuffs are not true travertines but tuffs deposited by cold water springs.

Climatic reconstructions based on pollen data indicate a climate that is slightly cooler (especially in winter) and wetter than the current one.

Analyses of fossil pollen indicate a semi-arboreal, diverse, mosaic plant landscape, dominated by a Mediterranean forest of pine and oak with beech, fir and spruce, species that are now rare or no longer grow at low altitude in Provence, mainly due to human occupation. The presence of the chestnut tree is unexpected in a limestone environment, but this tree was able to grow on the decarbonate clays of the Oligocene, which outcropped everywhere in the Marseille basin.

Along the rivers, the riparian forest was diversified and included walnut and plane trees, as is the case today in the eastern Mediterranean, and trees such as alder, willow, hazel and ash. The potential diet of the first hominins, which we have reconstructed from pollen and plant macroremains, was varied and included the fruits of chestnut, hazelnut and walnut trees, as well as arborescent Rosaceae such as various species of plum and apple trees. Remains of vines have also been found, showing that grapes were already part of the diet of frugivores, including hominins.

Among the many edible herbs identified are the Compositae, which include many salads, nettles and mallow, a plant particularly popular in North Africa. Populations of hominins could potentially feed on resources from the sea, which were diversified at the time, and on land resources, including large herbivores.

The most surprising discovery was the presence of cereal pollen (proto-cereals because of their age), including rye, which was identified. These proto-cereals, which grew as part of the steppe herbaceous procession, were able to substantially enrich the diet of mammals (including hominins) that frequented the Marseille basin a million years ago with carbohydrates.

The Marseilles basin is the third site after those of Acigol and Kocabas (Andrieu-Ponel et al., 2021), in south-western Anatolia, to show the presence of proto-cereal pollen well before the start of the Neolithic period 12,000 years ago. The identification of spores of coprophilous fungi shows the presence in situ of herds of large herbivores.

It is possible that, as in Anatolia, the disturbance of ecosystems by large herbivores was responsible for the genetic mutation of Poaceae and the appearance of cereals. These sites show that the appearance of cereals was not caused by human populations, but rather by a natural process linked to biotic interactions between populations of large herbivores and steppe ecosystems.

In the Neolithic period, mankind, having become farmers out of necessity due to the reduction in mammalian fauna, would have cultivated edible plants that pre-existed in herbaceous ecosystems. This new discovery of proto-cereals requires a new vision of the history of human nutrition, as we suggested earlier (Andrieu-Ponel et al., 2021).

With the aim of gaining a better understanding of our future, an international collaboration involving researchers from the Centre de Recherche et d'Enseignement en Géosciences de l'Environnement (AMU/CNRS/IRD/INRAE/Collège de France) is exploring ancient warm periods in the Earth's history. In their study, published on 29 January in the journal Nature Geoscience, they show that an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere 56 million years ago led to a sudden change in rainfall and vegetation in Central Asia.

Today, vast treeless steppes characterise the landscape of Central Asia. The rare rainfall that reaches the interior of Asia is mainly due to the monsoon in summer or to mid-latitude westerlies in winter and spring. These steppes are particularly sensitive to changes in temperature and precipitation, with all the consequences that this implies for their inhabitants, such as the Saiga antelope or Przewalski's horse, an endangered species”, explains Dr Niels Meijer, before adding: “One of the major uncertainties of global climate change is how the Asian monsoon and the Central Asian regions that depend on it will react to future climate change.”

As part of an international research team that has been working in the region for more than twenty years, Niels Meijer recently focused on the warm period of the early Palaeogene, where he identified a hyperthermal event of extreme warming precisely dated to 56 million years ago.

In order to reconstruct the precipitation patterns of this period, the researchers combined their expertise to develop an innovative multi-proxy approach in which they combined fossil pollen and spores with geochemical data from fossil soils. “During the hyperthermal event we studied, precipitation temporarily doubled due to higher temperatures and the regional steppe was replaced by a forested landscape,” explains Meijer, describing the results and adding, “But most importantly, we were able to use geochemical data to show that the soils dried out in winter, meaning that, contrary to expectations, most of the precipitation fell during the summer period - which is comparable to the modern monsoon.”

Scientists associate this hyperthermal event with the “Paleocene/Eocene temperature maximum”, a phase of global warming associated with a considerable increase in greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. During this period, the global temperature rose by an average of six degrees Celsius in the space of a few thousand years. Their research shows that in Asia this event was accompanied by exceptionally wet conditions and an inland expansion of precipitation, which they have called a proto-monsoon.

“The abrupt greening of the Central Asian steppe desert as a result of the monsoon climate probably also allowed the spread of new mammal species and may also have played a role in feedbacks in the global carbon cycle”, Meijer sums up before concluding: “Our work shows an abrupt and non-linear response of the Asian monsoons to extreme greenhouse conditions. Although the seas and mountains of Asia 56 million years ago were very different from those of today, these data highlight the possibility of abrupt changes in precipitation and ecosystems in Central Asia under future global warming. Current warming is imposing extreme temperatures and increased drought on the Central Asian steppe and its fragile flora and fauna, which are already under threat from anthropogenic land use. Even more dramatic abrupt changes are expected if temperatures continue to rise”.

29.01.2024

On 11 January 2024, Pierre Deschamps, IRD Research Fellow, CEREGE Climate Team, held the Grand Séminaire at CEREGE.

WAO ooo... the project: or how to examine the question of water resources and their sustainability, in the context of an oasis system in an arid environment

Since 2020, CEREGE has been in charge of the water component of the OASIS programme of the French Development Agency for Al-Ula (AFALULA). Initiated as part of the collaboration with Saudi Arabia and the Royal Commission for Al-Ula (RCU), this research and development programme aims to study the Al-Ula oasis through a holistic approach to the Al-Ula oasis, which is home to the archaeological site of Madâin Sâlih. Better known by the ancient name of Hegra, this major site of Nabataean civilisation in north-west Saudi Arabia was the first Saudi site to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This multidisciplinary programme brings together archaeologists, geo-archaeologists, palaeoclimatologists, soil scientists, botanists, agronomists, ethnobotanists and ethnologists, and aims to improve our understanding of the Al-Ula oasis ecosystem and provide a knowledge base capable of building a sustainable economic and tourism development model that respects this exceptional environment.

WAO ("Past, present and future Water resources in Al-Ula Oasis") focuses on the study of the current and past functioning of the aquifer system that feeds the Al-Ula oasis ecosystem, and mobilises a wide range of skills from CEREGE and its partners (hydrology, geophysics, isotope geochemistry, palaeoclimatology, modelling). On the one hand, the aim is to assess the current resource and the impact of withdrawals on it in order to produce scenarios for its sustainable management, and on the other hand, to reconstruct the functioning of this hydrosystem in the climatic and environmental context of the last millennia in order to specify the conditions that enabled human occupation of this arid zone and the development of protohistoric societies.

Tropical forests and savannahs are home to a fifth of the world's population, who depend heavily on these ecosystems for their livelihoods. With global change underway, predicting how these ecosystems will react to changes in rainfall and relative humidity is a priority.

Their ecological functioning as alternative stable states means that their response to environmental change is non-linear and particularly difficult to predict. This is due to feedbacks between vegetation structure and fire that stabilise each state, even if environmental conditions change, up to a certain threshold. Once this threshold is crossed, there is a transition from one state to another, and it is virtually impossible to return to the initial state. One of the main limitations to identifying these thresholds is that the ecological processes involved occur over long time scales (>100 years), which exceed the temporal depth of the empirical data available, which is often limited to a few decades.

Fossil archives contained in lake sediments, such as the ones found in the Mediterranean, help to overcome this limitation. However, palaeoecological reconstructions represent a real methodological challenge, because bio-indicators enable us to estimate the variables of interest in the past in a rather qualitative way (more/less), but identifying the thresholds in environmental conditions at the origin of vegetation transitions requires quantitative reconstructions of past vegetation and climatic variables.

The Thresholds project has two main objectives:

to participate in the methodological development of a new quantitative indicator of past relative humidity based on the analysis of the triple isotopic composition of oxygen (17O-excess) in phytoliths, an indicator recently developed at CEREGE

to identify the relative humidity thresholds at the origin of forest-savanna transitions, and the ranges of values that have allowed a certain resilience of the forest over the last 5,000 years in Africa, using quantitative reconstitutions of relative humidity and comparisons with reconstitutions of vegetation and fires.

The results of this project will help to better identify and quantify the relative humidity thresholds associated with vegetation transitions. Ultimately, the results of this project will provide a better understanding of the ecological functioning of tropical forests and savannahs, and in particular their response to past environmental changes, in order to better integrate them into vegetation models and provide more accurate projections of their responses to current climate change.

This project was carried out within the framework of and with the technical and material support and collaboration of ANR HUMI-17 and PAST-17.
