Une avanc\u00e9e majeure consiste \u00e0 comprendre le changement de la r\u00e9ponse du climat de la Terre au for\u00e7age orbital pendant la &#8220;Transition du Milieu du Pl\u00e9istoc\u00e8ne&#8221; [TMP, il y a 900 000 ans \u00e0 1,2 millions d&#8217;ann\u00e9es], lorsque la cyclicit\u00e9 dominante de 40 000 ans a c\u00e9d\u00e9 la place \u00e0 la p\u00e9riode actuelle de 100 000 ans.<\/p><p>Il est essentiel de comprendre le r\u00f4le des for\u00e7ages climatiques tel que celui exerc\u00e9 par les gaz \u00e0 effet de serre, dans cette transition. Les liens entre le cycle du carbone, les calottes glaciaires, l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re et le comportement des oc\u00e9ans doivent \u00e9galement \u00eatre mieux compris afin d&#8217;aider la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 concevoir une strat\u00e9gie efficace d&#8217;att\u00e9nuation et d&#8217;adaptation au changement climatique.<\/p><p>Seules les carottes de glace contiennent des informations directes et quantitatives sur les for\u00e7ages climatiques pass\u00e9s et les r\u00e9ponses de l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re. Cependant, la plus longue carotte de glace disponible \u00e0 ce jour (EPICA) ne couvre que les derniers 800 000 ans.<\/p><p>Ce projet permet \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9 europ\u00e9enne des glaciologues d&#8217;effectuer un forage, en Antarctique, pour extraire la carotte de glace la plus ancienne au monde. L&#8217;objectif scientifique principal du <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondepica.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">projet BE-OIC<\/a> est d&#8217;obtenir des informations quantitatives et \u00e0 haute r\u00e9solution sur les changements climatiques et environnementaux au cours des derniers 1,5 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es. La relation de cause \u00e0 effet qui a conduit \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9nigmatique changement de TPM dans le syst\u00e8me climatique n&#8217;est pas encore comprise, car des informations importantes sur les changements globaux du syst\u00e8me climatique manquent encore.<\/p><p>Le CEREGE participera aux efforts de datation de la partie la plus profonde de la carotte de glace, en utilisant les nucl\u00e9ides cosmog\u00e9niques du b\u00e9ryllium-10 et du chlore-36 extraits de la glace.
