{"id":21526,"date":"2023-11-07T14:26:30","date_gmt":"2023-11-07T13:26:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cerege.fr\/?p=21526"},"modified":"2024-02-20T15:45:41","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T14:45:41","slug":"en-route-to-the-secret-of-the-construction-of-the-gizeh-pyramids-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cerege.fr\/en\/le-co2-atmospherique-lie-a-la-ventilation-des-eaux-oceaniques\/","title":{"rendered":"Atmospheric CO2 linked to the ventilation of ocean waters?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"21526\" class=\"elementor elementor-21526\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f0d9e20 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f0d9e20\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-66 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3250772\" data-id=\"3250772\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cfda107 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cfda107\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>On 26 October 2023, Nature Geosciences published<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41561-023-01297-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> \u201cMillennial atmospheric CO2 changes linked to ocean ventilation modes over past 150,000 years\u201d.<\/a><br \/><\/em><\/p><p>The ventilation of deep ocean waters, which are rich in carbon, can strongly affect CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0but little is known about its history over the millennia.\u00a0<\/p><p>Measurements of the paleo-concentration of CO<sub>2<\/sub> in the air bubbles of polar ice cores show - for the cold stages (<em>stadials<\/em>) in the North Atlantic over millennia - with enigmatic contrasting trends (increases, decreases or stability). This article presents a high-resolution record - well dated over the last 150,000 years - of variations in the acidity of the deep waters of the North Atlantic. It reveals five ocean ventilation modes for the cold stages and their consequences for carbon storage in the ocean and for variations in CO<sub>2<\/sub> atmospheric.\u00a0<\/p><p>Our data (Boron\/Calcium ratio, carbonate ion proxy (CO<sub>3<\/sub><sup>(2-)<\/sup>) measured on a species of benthic foraminifer, along a sediment core from the Iberian margin) show that during stages associated with a strong increase in CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0At the same time, the strongly ventilated Southern Ocean released large quantities of carbon from its deep waters. Other cold phases were characterised by poor ventilation of the Southern and North Atlantic Oceans, which favoured the accumulation of carbon in the deep ocean, slowing the transfer of CO<sub>2\u00a0 <\/sub>to the atmosphere, or reversing it, with the result that CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0atmospheric.\u00a0<\/p><p>This article shows that on a millennial scale, ocean carbon storage and CO<sub>2 <\/sub>are modulated by several oceanic ventilation modes resulting from the interaction of the two polar regions, and not just the Southern Ocean.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41561-023-01297-x#auth-J_-Yu-Aff1-Aff2-Aff3\" data-test=\"author-name\" data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"open author\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-author-popup=\"auth-J_-Yu-Aff1-Aff2-Aff3\" data-corresp-id=\"c1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J.
