Co-chaired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cerege.fr\/en\/cerege\/olivier-sulpis\/\">Olivier Sulpis<\/a>, a research fellow at CEREGE, the report warns that no technique is currently ready for large-scale deployment. All are based on natural processes, but at very different scales to those on which they have historically operated. Their effectiveness, sustainability and effects on ecosystems remain uncertain.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-99049d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"99049d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Science and regulation: setting standards for ocean CO\u2082<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad231f6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ad231f6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The role of science is to provide an objective framework. \u00abOur job is not to decide whether mCDR should be deployed, but to determine what evidence and what safeguards are needed to make any decision responsible.\u00bb<em>,<\/em> explains Olivier Sulpis in the\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/lejournal.cnrs.fr\/articles\/rechauffement-peut-reduire-le-co2-oceanique\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview published in CNRS Le Journal<\/a>. Priority recommendations include the introduction of harmonised MRV standards, the funding of studies on long-term effectiveness and environmental impacts, and the continuation of observation networks cycle<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b98bc93 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b98bc93\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This work draws on the expertise developed within the exoCean laboratory at CEREGE, which studies the ocean carbonate cycle from the surface to the deep ocean. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cerege.fr\/en\/sciences\/climate\/climate-projects\/deep-c-erc\/\">The DEEP-C ERC project<\/a>, led by Olivier Sulpis, focuses on the dissolution of calcium carbonate (CaCO\u2083) in deep waters, a natural process that acts as a CO\u2082 sink on millennia time scales. Using high-pressure reactors, advanced sensors and global biogeochemical models, DEEP-C is providing a better understanding of the natural mechanisms and microbial interactions that control carbon sequestration. This knowledge is directly useful for defining MRV protocols and assessing the feasibility of mCDR techniques.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, capturing oceanic CO\u2082 is a promising but uncertain field.
