Oceanic Carbon Cycling Response to Global Temperature Changes - CYCLOCARB

Summary

English:

Human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide are disrupting the natural variations of the carbon cycle. Past climatic variations provide essential information on the carbon cycling and its associated climate changes to explore different scenarios from unrestrained to even decreased emissions of CO2. In the CYCLOCARB project, we will develop a semi empirical model of carbon cycling and climates over the last glacial cycle, a unique dampened natural analogue for expected anthropogenic forcing’s. This semi-empirical model will

be constrained by an extensive database including indicators for temperature and ice volume (δ18O of foraminifers, sea surface temperature proxies) and proxies for global carbon cycling and partitioning between ocean, atmosphere and solid earth (δ13C of foraminifers, carbonate, organic carbon content in marine sediment).

Temperature proxies’ records will help refining climatic sensitivity to greenhouse gases, and the temporal evolution of temperature pattern will shed light on the response of the oceans to climate forcing’s. The δ13C of the climatic system will be reconstructed and the effect of the biological pump quantified for the last 150ka, encompassing both a major emission event at termination II and some decreased CO2 intervals. Altogether, our climatic reconstructions and the semi-empirical model will improve our understanding of the natural response of the carbon cycling to anthropic changes. Moreover, CYCLOCARB will permit the quantification of carbon stocks in Exclusive Economic Zones, which could affect Europe national greenhouse gases inventories and marine carbon stock management.

CYCLOCARB is funded by European Commission Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (Individual Fellowships) and will be implemented at CEREGE – Aix-Marseille Université.

Les variations climatiques passées éclairent le fonctionnement du cycle du carbone et son impact sur les stocks de carbone sur Terre (atmosphère, océan, continent) lors de changements climatiques globaux. Le projet CYCLOCARB permettra de développer un modèle semi-empirique du climat et du cycle du carbone lors du dernier cycle glaciaire, dont les changements de grande amplitude peuvent être traités comme des analogues du forçage anthropique. Ce modèle sera contraint grâce au développement d’une base de données globale incluant proxies de température des eaux de surface et de volume des glaces (paléothermomètres géochimiques, δ18O des foraminifères), et des indicateurs du cycle du carbone (δ13C des foraminifères, concentration en carbone organique et inorganique des sédiments marins).

Les proxies de température permettront d’évaluer la sensibilité du climat aux variations des gaz à effet de serre, et la réponse des océans à ces forçages climatiques. La composition isotopique du stock de carbone du système climatique (océan-atmosphère) sera évaluée dans le but de quantifier l’impact global des variations de la pompe biologique océanique sur le climat au cours des derniers 150 000 ans. Le modèle semi-empirique et les reconstructions climatiques participeront à une meilleure compréhension de la réponse du cycle naturel du carbone aux forçages anthropiques. Enfin, CYCLOCARB permettra de quantifier les stocks de carbone sédimentaire, ce qui pourrait affecter la gestion de ces stocks dans les zones économiques exclusives.
