Les sédiments marins archivent les crises du champ magnétique terrestre

Les variations passées de l'intensité du champ magnétique terrestre sont reflétées par la production d'isotopes dans l'atmosphère. Des chercheurs du CNRS, d'Aix Marseille Université et du CEA ont ainsi utilisé un isotope tiré des sédiments marins pour retrouver ces crises géomagnétiques sur une durée particulièrement longue. Le béryllium 10 livre ici une frise qui s'étend sur les 850 000 dernières années, au cours desquelles sa concentration fluctue en fonction de l'intensité du champ magnétique terrestre. Ces travaux, publiés dans la revue Journal of Geophysical, Research: Solid Earth, fournissent un nouvel outil pour étudier les variations passées du champ magnétique terrestre et son comportement à venir. L'isotope de béryllium 10Be se forme dans l'atmosphère sous l'action des rayonnements cosmiques, que le champ magnétique terrestre dévie en partie. Son intensité influe donc sur la production de 10Be. L'isotope est lessivé par la pluie peu de temps après sa formation et adhère aux grains minéraux qui décantent vers le fond de l'océan. Trois carottes sédimentaires ont été extraites du fond des océans Indien et Pacifique et analysées afin de comparer les concentrations en 10Be à celles de 9Be, issu de la croûte terrestre. Ce rapport a permis d'évaluer le taux de production atmosphérique du 10Be sur 850 000 ans, millénaire par millénaire. Son évolution suit bel et bien les variations du champ magnétique, déjà connues par les méthodes paléomagnétiques dont la fiabilité méritait d'être éprouvée. Les épisodes de surproduction de 10Be correspondent à des effondrements du champ magnétique terrestre, y compris ceux associés à sa dernière inversion connue : celle de Brunhes-Matuyama il y a 770 000 ans. Les chutes d'intensité du champ coïncident aussi avec les excursions, des inversions ratées où les pôles reprennent finalement leur place initiale. Ces phénomènes se produisent tous les 20 000 à 50 000 ans, la dernière remonte à 41 500 ans. Après plusieurs tentatives d'inversion, le champ magnétique terrestre pourrait donc être amené à reprendre ce comportement. Les mesures directes du champ magnétique mettent d'ailleurs en évidence une chute rapide du champ, amorcée il y a 2 500 ans. Si elle se poursuit dans le futur, elle pourrait engendrer des conditions favorables à une nouvelle excursion, voire à une inversion, dans deux à trois milliers d'années.
