Pr\u00e9dire leur r\u00e9ponse aux changements climatiques futurs est donc crucial mais repr\u00e9sente un d\u00e9fi car le fonctionnement \u00e9cologique qui d\u00e9termine leur r\u00e9partition reste controvers\u00e9. Une th\u00e9orie sugg\u00e8re que l\u2019hydroclimat (pr\u00e9cipitations, humidit\u00e9 relative) est le principal facteur d\u00e9terminant la distribution et les transitions entre for\u00eats et savanes. Une autre th\u00e9orie sugg\u00e8re que ces \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes repr\u00e9sentent des \u00e9tats stables alternatifs, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire qu\u2019ils coexistent sous de m\u00eames conditions climatiques et sont stabilis\u00e9s par des boucles de r\u00e9troactions entre feux et v\u00e9g\u00e9tation. Le feu joue donc un r\u00f4le central dans leur maintien ou la transition d\u2019un \u00e9tat \u00e0 un autre. Cependant, les preuves empiriques \u00e0 long terme testant le r\u00f4le du feu sur ces transitions \u00e9cosyst\u00e9miques restent limit\u00e9es. R\u00e9soudre ce d\u00e9bat est essentiel pour anticiper les dynamiques futures des paysages tropicaux et orienter les strat\u00e9gies de conservation et de gestion.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ce projet a pour objectif de tester si les changements de r\u00e9gimes de feu peuvent \u00e0 eux seuls d\u00e9clencher des transitions entre for\u00eats et savanes en Afrique de l&#8217;Ouest et centrale, ou si d&#8217;autres facteurs (climat, Hommes) sont d\u00e9terminants. Si le feu est un moteur principal, ces transitions ne seraient pas directement r\u00e9versibles, ce qui impliquerait que la gestion du feu pourrait \u00eatre essentielle \u00e0 la stabilit\u00e9 des paysages et \u00e0 leur restauration. Ces transitions \u00e9tant des processus lents elles n\u00e9cessitent des observations \u00e0 long terme, sur des \u00e9chelles de temps d\u00e9passant le mill\u00e9naire, que seule la pal\u00e9o\u00e9cologie peut fournir. Toutefois, les reconstitutions pal\u00e9o\u00e9cologiques pr\u00e9sentent des d\u00e9fis m\u00e9thodologiques. \u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 cette probl\u00e9matique, nous proposons de combiner l&#8217;analyse FTIR des charbons avec la calibration d&#8217;un mod\u00e8le de feu, afin de reconstruire quantitativement les principales composantes des r\u00e9gimes de feu pass\u00e9s (intensit\u00e9, fr\u00e9quence, surface br\u00fbl\u00e9e, origine). Ces analyses r\u00e9alis\u00e9es sur des s\u00e9diments couvrant les 3000 derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, et seront compar\u00e9es \u00e0 des reconstitutions de v\u00e9g\u00e9tation et de climat afin d\u2019\u00e9tablir la chronologie pr\u00e9cise de leurs changements.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enfin, un mod\u00e8le dynamique du couvert arbor\u00e9 sera d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 en utilisant ces reconstructions pour \u00e9valuer si les changements dans les r\u00e9gimes de feu peuvent, \u00e0 eux seuls, d\u00e9clencher des transitions for\u00eat-savane ou si d\u2019autres facteurs doivent \u00eatre pris en compte. Ces simulations permettront \u00e9galement de d\u00e9terminer si des \u00e9tats stables alternatifs existent en relation avec le couvert arbor\u00e9 et si les changements de v\u00e9g\u00e9tation observ\u00e9s correspondent \u00e0 des points de bascule.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En combinant des reconstructions quantitatives des feux avec la mod\u00e9lisation dynamique de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation, ce projet \u00e9tablira un nouveau cadre m\u00e9thodologique pour \u00e9tudier les transitions pass\u00e9es entre \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes et identifier leurs drivers.
