In view of the laboratory&#8217;s carbon footprint, we are aware that our professional activities are not in line with the objectives set out in the Paris agreement. We are also aware that these professional activities are essential for observing, analyzing and understanding the processes at work in the climate trajectory our planet is taking.<\/p><p>We are convinced that <strong>the knowledge we produce about the climate system must go hand in hand with an effort to reduce the impact of our own activities on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions<\/strong>.<\/p><p>In April 2024, we voted to embark on a process of experimentation to reduce our carbon footprint without hampering the effectiveness of our research.\u00a0\u00a0At the end of a year of experimentation, we put in place a concerted and determined process for a trajectory to reduce our GHG emissions.<\/p><p>The different steps of our experimentation and carbon footprint policy are detailed below.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ee3b18c elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"ee3b18c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-79f516e elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"79f516e\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-332c4a7\" data-id=\"332c4a7\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-40efd24 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"40efd24\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Convention for the decarbonation of the Climate Team<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2a23333 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2a23333\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-40fa8c5\" data-id=\"40fa8c5\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e6d58d8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e6d58d8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Following the adoption of our Environmental Manifesto, we constructed and wrote a convention for the decarbonation of the team between June and November 2024, thanks to the investment of some twenty volunteers.<\/p><p>Nineteen proposed measures were voted on between 17th of December 2024 and 17th of January 2025, with 86% of the team members taking part. The detailed measures and vote results can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cerege.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Convention-1.0_decarbonation_Climate.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p><div class=\"flex min-w-0 flex-1 flex-col\"><div class=\"flex w-full flex-col gap-2 break-words\" dir=\"auto\"><div><div class=\"select-none\"><div class=\"markdown-container-style max-w-none gap-1 overflow-x-visible py-0.5 pb-4 font-normal text-wrap break-words select-text\" data-message-part-type=\"answer\" data-testid=\"text-message-part\"><p class=\"whitespace-break-spaces\" dir=\"auto\">These measures include concrete commitments, such as:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Avoiding air travel<\/strong> for conferences held within Europe;<\/li><li><strong>Choosing train travel<\/strong> when the journey is under 10 hours or for destinations within France;<\/li><li><strong>Establishing regular days<\/strong> dedicated to sorting unused consumables and equipment, and creating a &#8220;second-hand&#8221; In 2025, the 90 members of the team consumed a total of <strong>83 tCO\u2082<\/strong> for their travels, which averages <strong>0.92 tCO\u2082 per individual<\/strong>. This figure only includes professional missions and does not account for daily commuting trips.<\/p><p>In December 2025, we voted to implement in early 2026 a collective strategy similar to what is implemented at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ige-grenoble.fr\/-Suivi-consommation-CO2-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IGE laboratory in Grenoble<\/a> (with a 86% participation rate, results available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cerege.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2026_climate_vote.pdf\">here<\/a>). We voted for a 40% reduction of our trip-related emissions for the period 2026-2030, corresponding to a <strong>decrease of 10% per year during the 5-year period<\/strong>. This 40% decrease is in agreement with the 50% decrease recommended by INSU for the 2020-2030 period, considering that many members of the team already decreased their travel footprint in previous years.<\/p><p><b>The collective <\/b><b>approach<\/b> <b>implies<\/b> <b>that<\/b><b>:<\/b><\/p><ul><li>Individual trajectories are not considered separately; instead, the focus is on the overall trajectory of the group.<\/li><li>Air travel is declared at the beginning of each year.
