Dans leur \u00e9tude, publi\u00e9e le 29 janvier dans la revue Nature Geoscience, ils montrent qu&#8217;une augmentation des gaz \u00e0 effet de serre dans l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re il y a 56 millions d&#8217;ann\u00e9es a entra\u00een\u00e9 un changement brutal des pr\u00e9cipitations et de la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation en Asie centrale.<\/i><\/p><p>Aujourd&#8217;hui, de vastes steppes sans arbres caract\u00e9risent le paysage de l&#8217;Asie centrale. Les rares pr\u00e9cipitations qui atteignent l&#8217;int\u00e9rieur de l&#8217;Asie sont principalement dues \u00e0 la mousson en \u00e9t\u00e9 ou aux vents d&#8217;ouest des latitudes moyennes en hiver et au printemps. Ces steppes sont particuli\u00e8rement sensibles aux changements de temp\u00e9rature et de pr\u00e9cipitations, avec toutes les cons\u00e9quences que cela implique pour leurs habitants, comme l&#8217;antilope de la Sa\u00efga ou le cheval de Przewalski, une esp\u00e8ce menac\u00e9e&#8221;, explique le Dr Niels Meijer, avant d&#8217;ajouter : &#8220;L&#8217;une des grandes incertitudes du changement climatique mondial est de savoir comment la mousson asiatique et les r\u00e9gions d&#8217;Asie centrale qui en d\u00e9pendent r\u00e9agiront aux futurs changements climatiques.&#8221;<\/p><p>Faisant partie d&#8217;une \u00e9quipe de recherche internationale qui travaille dans la r\u00e9gion depuis plus de vingt ans, Niels Meijer s&#8217;est r\u00e9cemment concentr\u00e9 sur la p\u00e9riode chaude du d\u00e9but du Pal\u00e9og\u00e8ne, o\u00f9 il a identifi\u00e9 un \u00e9v\u00e9nement hyperthermal de r\u00e9chauffement extr\u00eame dat\u00e9 avec pr\u00e9cision de 56 millions d&#8217;ann\u00e9es.<\/p><p>Afin de reconstituer les r\u00e9gimes de pr\u00e9cipitations de cette \u00e9poque, les chercheurs ont combin\u00e9 leur expertise pour d\u00e9velopper une approche multi-proxy innovante dans laquelle ils ont combin\u00e9 du pollen et des spores fossiles ainsi que des donn\u00e9es g\u00e9ochimiques provenant de sols fossiles. &#8220;Au cours de l&#8217;\u00e9v\u00e9nement hyperthermal que nous avons \u00e9tudi\u00e9, les pr\u00e9cipitations ont temporairement doubl\u00e9 en raison des temp\u00e9ratures plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es et la steppe r\u00e9gionale a \u00e9t\u00e9 remplac\u00e9e par un paysage forestier&#8221;, explique Meijer en d\u00e9crivant les r\u00e9sultats et en ajoutant : &#8220;Mais surtout, nous avons pu utiliser des donn\u00e9es g\u00e9ochimiques pour montrer que les sols se sont ass\u00e9ch\u00e9s en hiver, ce qui signifie que, contrairement aux attentes, la plupart des pr\u00e9cipitations sont tomb\u00e9es pendant la p\u00e9riode estivale &#8211; ce qui est comparable \u00e0 la mousson moderne.&#8221;<\/p><p>Les scientifiques associent cet \u00e9v\u00e8nement hyperthermal au &#8220;maximum de temp\u00e9rature du pal\u00e9oc\u00e8ne\/\u00e9oc\u00e8ne&#8221;, une phase de r\u00e9chauffement de la plan\u00e8te associ\u00e9e \u00e0 une augmentation consid\u00e9rable des gaz \u00e0 effet de serre dans l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re et les oc\u00e9ans de la Terre. Au cours de cette p\u00e9riode, la temp\u00e9rature globale a augment\u00e9 en moyenne de six degr\u00e9s Celsius en l&#8217;espace de quelques milliers d&#8217;ann\u00e9es. Leurs recherches montrent qu&#8217;en Asie cet \u00e9v\u00e8nement s&#8217;est accompagn\u00e9 de conditions exceptionnellement humides et \u00e0 une expansion des pr\u00e9cipitations vers l&#8217;int\u00e9rieur des terres, qu&#8217;ils ont appel\u00e9e proto-mousson.<\/p><p>&#8220;Le verdissement brutal du d\u00e9sert de la steppe d&#8217;Asie centrale r\u00e9sultant du climat de mousson a probablement aussi permis la propagation de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces de mammif\u00e8res et peut \u00e9galement avoir jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le dans les r\u00e9troactions du cycle mondial du carbone&#8221;, r\u00e9sume Meijer avant de conclure : &#8220;Notre travail montre une r\u00e9ponse abrupte et non lin\u00e9aire des moussons asiatiques aux conditions extr\u00eames de l&#8217;effet de serre. Bien que les mers et les montagnes d&#8217;Asie il y a 56 millions d&#8217;ann\u00e9es aient \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rentes de celles d&#8217;aujourd&#8217;hui, ces donn\u00e9es mettent en \u00e9vidence la possibilit\u00e9 de changements brusques dans les pr\u00e9cipitations et les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes d&#8217;Asie centrale dans le cadre d&#8217;un r\u00e9chauffement plan\u00e9taire futur. Le r\u00e9chauffement actuel impose des temp\u00e9ratures extr\u00eames et une s\u00e9cheresse accrue sur la steppe d&#8217;Asie centrale, ainsi que sur sa flore et sa faune fragiles, qui sont d\u00e9j\u00e0 menac\u00e9es par l&#8217;utilisation anthropique des sols.
