Malgr\u00e9 les avantages environnementaux potentiels consid\u00e9rables des nanotechnologies, les exigences de fabrication \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle, les limitations de co\u00fbt et les risques potentiels pour la sant\u00e9 et l&#8217;environnement des nanomat\u00e9riaux manufactur\u00e9s (ENMs) constituent des obstacles courants \u00e0 leur utilisation \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>Dans cette revue, nous \u00e9valuons les b\u00e9n\u00e9fices de l\u2019utilisation des ENMs dans les applications environnementales par rapport \u00e0 leurs risques potentiels pour la sant\u00e9 publique et l&#8217;environnement, en nous concentrant sur le traitement et la r\u00e9utilisation de l&#8217;eau, et identifions des strat\u00e9gies pour leur utilisation responsable.<\/p><p>Les analyses de cycle de vie indiquent que les impacts environnementaux et sanitaires potentiels les plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s des ENMs utilis\u00e9s dans les produits commerciaux sont associ\u00e9s \u00e0 la production plut\u00f4t qu&#8217;\u00e0 leur lib\u00e9ration lors de l&#8217;utilisation. En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, les concentrations d&#8217;ENMs d\u00e9tect\u00e9es ou pr\u00e9dites sont de 1 \u00e0 4 ordres de grandeur inf\u00e9rieures aux concentrations auxquelles des effets sont observ\u00e9s. Les risques environnementaux et sanitaires des ENMs sont donc relativement faibles, compte tenu des faibles concentrations et des transformations passivantes (comme l\u2019oxydation) qui se produisent dans l&#8217;environnement. Cependant, les impacts potentiels sur la sant\u00e9 humaine et les \u00e9cosyst\u00e8mes d&#8217;une exposition \u00e0 long terme (de plusieurs mois \u00e0 plusieurs ann\u00e9es) \u00e0 de faibles concentrations d&#8217;ENMs (par exemple, un niveau inf\u00e9rieur au microgramme par litre dans l&#8217;eau) restent largement inexplor\u00e9s.<\/p><p>L&#8217;adoption de strat\u00e9gies de chimie verte et d&#8217;immobilisation (dans ou sur des substrats tels que des \u00e9lectrodes, des membranes) peut limiter davantage la lib\u00e9ration des ENMs et att\u00e9nuer l&#8217;exposition, minimisant ainsi leur d\u00e9versement potentiel dans l&#8217;environnement.
