Rethinking the Lithium Cycle: Emerging Challenges and New Potentials

Abstract: Since 2010, global lithium consumption has surged dramatically, driven primarily by the rise of high-tech devices—such as smartphones and laptops—as well as Li-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Current lithium usage now far exceeds its natural riverine flux to the oceans, while recycling rates remain strikingly low. This imbalance introduces unprecedented challenges to our understanding of the global lithium cycle, its impact on natural biodiversity, and its utility for geochemists as an isotopic tracer of continental weathering. In this presentation, I will introduce the isotopic approach developed through the ERC-funded SeaLi2Bio project and share recent findings in environmental and biological applications.
