Applications de l’unité de chimie inorganique

Profils paléoenvironnementaux à haute résolution

De nombreux tests techniques nous ont permis de montrer que les analyses semi-quantitatives par scanner XRF peuvent être calibrées grâce aux mesures par ICP-MS (Böning et al. 2007, Cartapanis et al. 2011). La combinaison des deux méthodes permet d’évaluer la variabilité de paramètres climatiques comme l’apport des fleuve (via la caractérisation de la fraction terrigène avec Ti, K, Si, Fe…), la productivité biologique (avec le Br et le Cd pour la matière organique, Ca et Sr pour les carbonates biogéniques, Si/K ou Si/Ti pour l’opale), ainsi que les conditions d’oxydoréduction dans la colonne d’eau ou les sédiments (ex. Fe/Ti, Mn/Ti, Mo, U, Cd).

Nous utilisons les enregistrements en éléments majeurs, mineurs et traces obtenues sur des carottes de sédiments marins pour reconstituer la variabilité des précipitations en zone intertropicale en relation avec la mousson (Tachikawa et al. 2011), pour étudier les changements de la ventilation des masses d’eaux profondes (Pailler et al. 2002, Bard & Rickaby 2009, Tachikawa et al. 2015) et intermédiaires, notamment au niveau des zones de minimum en oxygène (Böning & Bard 2009, Cartapanis et al. 2011, 2012, 2014), pour mettre en évidence l’apport des fleuves (Soulet al. 2013), ainsi que pour étudier la stratigraphie des sédiments à haute résolution (Darfeuil et al. 2016, Demory et al. 2019, Simon et al. 2020). Nous contribuons également à des études de sédiments lacustres afin de suivre la variabilité climatique à différentes échelles de temps, ainsi que pour étudier l’impact anthropique à l’échelle régionale (Wilhelm et al. 2012, 2013, Jenny et al. 2013, Simonneau et al. 2013, Doyen et al. 2013, Brisset et al. 2013, 2019, Gasse et al. 2015, Guerra et al. 2017, Cartier et al. 2018, Jouve et al. 2019, Marriner et al. 2019, Rodriguez-Zorro et al. 2020, 2022, Van der Meeren et al. 2022).

Indicateurs paléocéanographiques

Les foraminifères ont un squelette calcaire (test) qui enregistre les propriétés physiques et chimiques de l’eau de mer. Une application fréquemment utilisée dans le domaine de la paléocéanographie est basé sur le rapport Mg/Ca en tant que thermomètre (Barker al. 2005). Le Mg/Ca ainsi que d’autres rapports (Sr/Ca, U/Ca) mesurés dans les coraux peuvent aussi servir de paléothermomètre (Cardinal et al. 2001, Silenzi et al. 2005). Le rapport Mg/Ca des foraminifères a été appliqué à de nombreuses archives du Quaternaire récent, ce qui a nous permis d’évaluer l’influence du forçage radiatif en relation avec la concentration en CO2 atmosphérique sur la température de l’eau en surface dans l’océan Pacifique tropical ouest (Tachikawa et al. 2014) et de reconstituer la structure thermique verticale dans la colonne d’eau par la combinaison de plusieurs espèces de foraminifères calcifiants à profondeurs différentes (Regoli et al. 2015, Hollstein et al. 2018). L’application du rapport Mg/Ca n’est pas limitée au Quaternaire récent. Le proxy nous a permis de tracer la circulation de surface de l’Atlantique Nord durant l’intensification de la glaciation de l’hémisphère Nord au Plio-Pléistocène (Bolton et al. 2018). Plus récemment, nous avons révélé pour la première fois que l’océan tropical a été refroidi avec une amplitude aussi importante que 3ºC durant le Miocène récent (9-5 Ma) (Martinot et al. 2022).

L’analyse du Mg/Ca a débuté grâce à l’ICP-OES du service commun de chimie du CEREGE, mais depuis 2017 les analyses sont réalisées à l’aide de l’ICP-QMS du LGO2i, ainsi que pour mesurer d’autres rapports élémentaires à partir des mêmes foraminifères. Par exemple, le rapport U/Ca de tests de foraminifères varie selon la quantité de l’uranium authigène précipité sur les tests au fond de l’océan ou dans les sédiments. Il sert comme indicateur de l’état d’oxygénation de l’eau profonde (Tachikawa et al. 2021).
