Experimental Modelling & Acoustics Applications

The advantage of this cluster is that it enables us to study complex wave phenomena, where the wavelength is close to the size of the heterogeneities in the case of porous multiphase heterogeneous media, random media or granular media, which cannot be simulated using theory or purely numerical models. It will also enable specific measurement tools to be developed (sonar, Ultra High Resolution sediment sounder, endoscopic tool, etc.), as well as tomography or processing algorithms that can be directly validated in an acoustic tank, using easily reproducible experiments. The problems envisaged range from underwater acoustics to marine or terrestrial seismics, from slope instability to evolving fractured environments, from environments including porous cavities to variable porosity environments.

The advantages of such a laboratory are, on the one hand :

Scaling of geophysical phenomena

Including chemical, biological or biophysical phenomena (sedimentary ecosystems) that are easily reproducible and inexpensive compared to full-scale studies of offshore campaigns or seismic field geoexploration; and on the other hand :

Rapid data acquisition compatible with field experiments

In this way, we can control and study complex, evolving wave phenomena, taking three-dimensional effects into account.
